The Novice Program

The Novice Program gives beginning and struggling readers the structured foundation they need to read and spell simple words with confidence.

Designed for students in PreK through Grade 1, as well as older learners who need support with foundational skills, the program provides carefully sequenced lessons in sound awareness, phonics, blending, spelling, reading fluency, writing, and high-frequency words.

The Novice Program is for:

Build a Strong Foundation for Reading Success

The Novice Program includes 19 structured lessons that teach the essential skills students need to read and spell simple words.

Each lesson introduces a new sound and spelling pattern, then provides guided practice in:

• Hearing and identifying sounds in words
• Reading words
• Spelling and writing words
• Blending sounds together
• Reading short stories and poems

The lessons move from simple to more complex skills. Students begin with short vowels and common consonants, then gradually learn to read and spell words such as mat, had, sit, snag, caps, and band. They also practice reading and spelling high-frequency words such as has, are, here, and so.

Because each lesson builds on what came before, students can make steady progress without being asked to take a leap before they are ready. The program also gives students repeated practice with recognizing letters, connecting sounds to spellings, reading words smoothly, and writing what they hear.

Students read engaging stories and poems written at different levels of difficulty. This gives learners repeated opportunities to practice their skills and experience success. Cumulative word lists at the end of each lesson provide additional practice for students who are ready for a challenge.

Sound/Spelling Cards and Elkonin Tokens are available separately in our catalog. Used alongside the Marvi’s Way® lessons, they can make sound and spelling practice more interactive through games and hands-on activities.
