Marvilene Hagopian

Marvi is a passionate reading teacher, an expert curriculum specialist with evidence-based training, and—most importantly—a mother who understands firsthand the worries and hopes of families navigating literacy challenges. When her son struggled to learn to read and write in public school, Marvi didn't wait for promises that he would "catch up someday." Instead, she became a relentless advocate, empowering both her child and other families to take charge of their learning journeys.

She designed her easy-to-follow reading and spelling lessons with real families and teachers in mind: for parents at the kitchen table, desperate for ways to help their children thrive, and for teachers who never give up on a struggling reader. Each manual is purposefully affordable and accessible, inspired by the conviction that every child deserves the power and joy of reading—no matter their story.

Marvi brings substantial professional expertise to her work. She spent more than a decade at the Reading Lions Center / California Technical Assistance Center for Reading First, where she was trained by respected researchers in literacy and reading instruction, including Louisa Cook Moats, Ed.D.; Marilyn Adams, Ph.D.; Barbara Foreman, Ph.D.; Edward J. Kame'enui, Ph.D.; John Shefelbine, Ph.D./Ed.S.; Doug Carnine, Ph.D.; Reid Lyon, Ph.D., who served as a research neuropsychologist and Chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch of the NICHD at the National Institutes of Health; and others.

As a curriculum specialist, Marvi directed the development of six-week and end-of-year assessments for California's state-adopted reading programs—practical tools to help teachers understand which skills and content their students had learned and identify those that required additional instruction and practice.

Her assessments covered every essential pillar of reading: phonemic awareness, letter naming, phonics, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Districts across California relied on this work—from K–6 English programs to K–3 Spanish programs—because it provided practical, trustworthy insight into student progress. During her career, Marvi analyzed student data at every level, from individual classrooms to entire districts and statewide trends, always with one goal in mind: helping children become confident, capable readers. Now retired, she shares her expertise and resources for the benefit of families and educators. You can download the tests at https://readingtests.info/. You may also benefit from the insights she shares on her https://schooltalk.info/website, where she explains the various components of reading comprehension and how they are taught.

Today, Marvi's Way® is at the heart of everything she offers—rooted in research, shaped by years of classroom and statewide experience, and powered by a mother's determination to help children thrive. If you're looking for a supportive, proven path to reading growth, you're in the right place.
